Top 5 tips for what to wear in a photoshoot

There are a few things you should consider when trying to determine your and your family’s wardrobe for your photoshoot. Here are my top 5 tips!

1. Mom (or the soon to be bride) picks her outfit first. Women get first dibs. Period. If she likes her outfit then she will be happier with how the photos turn out. As they say, happy wife, happy life.

2. Coordinate, don’t match. Not everyone needs to be in a white t-shirt and jeans. Or dressed in all black. Choose colors that go together rather than match. For example, it’s hard to go wrong when you choose all earth tones or all jewel tones.

3. Add pattern or texture. In terms of patterns, avoid anything that is “too loud.” Men/boys in a tasteful checkered or stripe shirt looks nice. And women/girls in florals or polka dots are good options. Textures like lace and knits also photograph beautifully. With this being said, I would avoid putting everyone in your family in a patterned outfit. Maybe half in a solid color and half in a coordinating pattern.

BONUS TIP: lay everyone’s outfit out on the bed. If something is really standing out to you, it will probably stand out in the photo too.

4. Less is more. You want these photos to be timeless. Avoid overly trendy and loud clothing and accessories. Avoid any shirts with writing or phrases. I know your little boy loves superheroes, but maybe not the best time to him to wear a Batman t-shirt. Simple is best!

5. Consider the decor of your home. If you are planning to hang photos in a particular room that is neutral colors and your family is dressed in all bright colors, are you really going to like how that looks hung up on the wall in that space? Seems silly to think about but it is worth mentioning, especially if this photo is a focal point of the room.

Hope this helps you plan your family's photo ready outfits!
